For many years the silhouette was the popular form for portraits. Silhouettes in America began in the late 1700's and lasted till the mid 1800's until the arrival of the camera. After that photographs became the most popular form for portraits. Silhouette artists of the 20th century could usually be found at fairs and carnivals while silhouette artists of today advertise their trade on websites. Silhouettes are still popular for commemorating weddings and childrens portraits, though not very common.
These two romantic silhouettes are postcard size and framed under glass. The back mark says "Made in Czechoslovakia".
